Everyone Just Got Memory. The Upkeep Is Still Yours.

Claude’s memory works across every surface now — one editable list of topics you can read, correct, or delete, the same on the desktop as in a task running off in the cloud. Fix a fact once and it’s fixed everywhere. It’s a clean design, and it’s the one I’d have picked: plain files, yours to edit, nothing hidden. I’ve run a hand-built version of exactly this for a year, so watching it become the default reads less like news and more like confirmation.

Here’s the part worth sitting with, though. What shipped is storage — a place to put the fact, and a way to get it back. Storage was never the expensive part.

The expensive part is a note that was true the day you wrote it, isn’t anymore, and that the system still trusts. I wrote a whole Signal on that one — the cost of memory isn’t what you store, it’s what quietly goes stale while you’re looking elsewhere. A tidy list of remembered topics doesn’t touch that. And the easier saving gets, the faster that list fills with rules nobody revisits and a “why” that got stripped down to an order you can’t argue with anymore.

None of that is a storage problem, so a better place to store things won’t solve it. What solves it is upkeep. A reason attached to every rule, so you can tell when the reason expired… a habit that treats a stale memory as worse than a missing one… a pass, every so often, that asks not what do I remember but what do I remember that’s no longer true.

So the announcement doesn’t move my answer. It sharpens it. Access to memory just went free and universal — which is good, genuinely. The method — what earns a slot, what to cut, how to keep the whole thing honest as it grows — is still the part you build yourself.

The floor came up for everyone. The upkeep is still the work, and the work is still yours.
